This Week in Africa (24/10/2013)

– News relevant to Christians in Africa

How to Approach the Issue of LGBT Rights in Africa– Okafor does an incredible job of demonstrating how to push an agenda. This is not really a news item as much as a ra-ra piece. Okafor says, “LGBT issues in Africa must be approached from multiple angles: political, social, legal, and cultural.” Note the absence of religious. She goes on to write, “Homosexuality predates colonial Africa and was present as a way of life during the pre-colonial times…   homophobia can be readily explained, because now Africans believe that homosexuality was never a part of their culture; they believe it to be exclusive to Western culture” According to the author Christianity has been rather successful at totally obliterating the idea of homosexuality from African culture; the question then is how was it unable to rid the culture of polygamy, witchcraft and tribalism? Her answer to the ‘Western’ ‘imposition’ of Christianity: western secularism.

Western Churches Neglect Causes of Radical Islam’s Rise In AfricaA wonderful article I came across this week, very refreshing. Archbishop Council Nedd (II) writes beautifully and biblically about issues in Africa. While the article is about the rise of Islam in Africa, there are fantastic comments regarding gender issues in the church, and the detriment of ignoring the Scriptures comments regarding gender.

Is Africa Cursed –  An older article, but well worth the read.  Here is an excerpt, ““Is Africa cursed?” This startling question was put to Dr. Wayne Grudem by a Nigerian couple who wanted to better understand the reason for the seemingly perpetual poverty and economic malaise that Africa finds itself in. Sadly the recent, tragic events in Marikana have again highlighted the socio-economic problems in our own land. According to the Gini Index South Africa has the highest income inequality in the world with a Gini Index of 63.6%.”

Will Africa’s Anglicans Succeed at Revival This Week? – The Anglican Church in Africa is seeking to base its practise on the Word of God, especially regarding the issue of homosexuality.

South African Radio Station Fined for Unflattering Mention of Islam– The Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) fined in an August 29, 2013 judgment a South African radio broadcaster for making an “unjustifiable connection with Islam” during news reports.

During all those years [of rebellion], where was my free will? What was the hidden, secret place from which it was summoned in a moment, so that I might bend my neck to your easy yoke . . .? How sweet all at once it was for me to be rid of those fruitless joys which I had once feared to lose . . ! You drove them from me, you who are the true, the sovereign joy. [There’s the key phrase and the key reality for understanding the heart of Augustinianism.] You drove them from me and took their place, you who are sweeter than all pleasure, though not to flesh and blood, you who outshine all light, yet are hidden deeper than any secret in our hearts, you who surpass all honor, though not in the eyes of men who see all honor in themselves. . . . O Lord my God, my Light, my Wealth, and my Salvation.
